Focusing in on the moment......

When I write a story I am expressing my own character. There are various series of events that come together to create conflict my character must overcome. By the end of the story it is not the events that the reader will discuss with other readers. What will be discussed is the character of the character I have created.

Dr. Bill Jackson said, "It is not the things we accomplish that are important, it is the very act of living that is truly important." When I write and click publish I am inviting readers into my life and the way I view and am living life in the moment which I am writing. The present which I am writing may not be read for a year or more, but it is still a moment in my life that had my complete attention and focus.

The importance of being present for a writer is the difference between inviting readers to participate are not including them at all. Success as a writer is about bringing value to life; my life as the writer and the reader's life as my audience.

I can live a full and happy life simply by creating a character and a series of events that tie writer, characters and reader together. In order to live my life fully I must write a full life. Writing a full life means creating bonds and ties between myself, my characters and my reader. We all need each other to have a complete experience.

Focusing on the moment is all about being involved. If I am writing and living in the past then I am missing the opportunity in the moment to write what I am feeling. If I am writing and living in the future then I am also missing the opportunity to focus on the moment.

Distraction is the writer's greatest enemy. External turmoil, codependence and consumed thinking and feeling all distract this writer from writing. When my life is at its best I am taking care of myself first and giving attention in the moment only, to others. Living in the moment removes consuming thoughts and feelings. When I am living in my mind in the past or in the future I am consumed, but when my mind is focused on the moment I am free to write without distraction.

What is wonderful about writing is that there is no one way to do it other than sitting down and just doing it. Writing is the simplest form of self-expression. I can study and read about how to write and not ever write word. Learning how to write becomes a distraction. I can read how to get an agent, publisher, editor and be so distracted that again I don't write a single word.

Writing is about developing a lifelong routine of writing every day. Pages and chapters exist because every day I build upon the work from the day before. Each time I sit at the laptop I do not start my story over. I learn from what I have written and write beyond where I left off.

My mood dictates how I approach my writing for the day. If I am defiant then I may just start my story over. If I am accepting of what I have written and am willing to go further then I continue on with my story. Writing isn't about totality it is about continually moving forward in our own personal growth as writers.

Daily writing leaves me open to write characters that have all types of encounters and conflicts with life. In my daily writing I have a responsibility to my characters to help them face their challenges and lead them to progress and growth as people my readers identify with.

The freedom in writing is focusing on the moment. Each word written in the moment leaves a trail of wonderment that can be manipulated a thousand different ways in the very next moment........
